Virtual Town Hall scheduled for June WisMed referendum briefing
In August of 2020, the Wisconsin Medical Society (WisMed) House of Delegates (HOD) voted overwhelmingly to eliminate itself as WisMed’s ultimate policymaking body. Following the trend of other state medical societies across the country and responding to member feedback criticizing the once-per-year House of Delegates process, WisMed embraced a new, year-round system where members can submit policy proposals at any time.

Governor vetoes WisMed-opposed independent nursing bill
For the second time in two state legislative biennial sessions, Governor Tony Evers has vetoed legislation that would have allowed certain advanced practice nurses to diagnose and treat patients independently. The Wisconsin Medical Society (WisMed) and multiple physician specialty societies strongly opposed the bill, 2023 Senate Bill 145.

State Assembly closes book on biennial regular session; Senate nearly done

Last Thursday (Feb. 22), the Wisconsin State Assembly adjourned sine die, meaning that the body has adjourned without setting a day to reconvene. This usually (but not always) means that the Assembly has finished its general legislative business for the 2023-24 biennium.

State Assembly pulls back from independent nursing bill vote following physician outcry
While the good news is only short-term for now, a key Wisconsin State Assembly committee retreated from voting on legislation allowing certain advanced practice nurses to diagnose and treat patients without physician supervision or collaboration requirements.

State Med Board keeps current board leaders for 2024
The state of Wisconsin’s Medical Examining Board (MEB) held its annual leadership elections during its monthly meeting on January 17. With special leadership elections held in November 2023 due to the State Senate’s rejection of then-MEB Chair Sheldon Wasserman, MD’s nomination for another four year term, the MEB unanimously reelected all three MEB officers selected in November.

Student scholarship and fellowship applications due Feb. 1
The Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation scholarships for the 2024-2025 school year and fellowship applications are open and due on February 1. Medical students are encouraged to check out these opportunities on our website and submit their application by February 1, 2024.

State Assembly GOP introduces “medical” cannabis bill
In a series of press conferences across the state on January 8, Republican members of the Wisconsin State Assembly unveiled a legislative proposal to create a so-called “medical” cannabis program in Wisconsin.
