The Office of General Counsel (OGC) provides legal advice and support to the Wisconsin Medical Society and its affiliated entities, Wisconsin Medical Society Insurance and Financial Services, Wisconsin Medical Society Holdings Company and the Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation. The OGC staff monitors case decisions issued by Wisconsin courts and augments the functions of the Society’s Government Relations department by analyzing proposed and existing legislation. The OGC staff provides legal support and information to Society councils, task forces and ad hoc groups.
The OGC staff provides legal information to Society members and health care partners, in addition to serving as the legal team for the Society and its affiliates, in the following ways:
- Responding to telephone and e-mail queries regarding a variety of issues that affect the practice of medicine in Wisconsin.
- Writing articles for the Society’s publications and solicit contributions of legal articles from outside attorneys to increase the flow of relevant and timely legal information to physicians.
- Preparing summaries of key court decisions to inform Society membership of case law that will impact physician practice.
- Publishing A Physician’s Guide to Wisconsin Health Law, with support from Quarles & Brady.
- Teaching seminars and giving short presentations to hospital medical staffs, county medical societies and other groups.
The OGC staff frequently interacts with outside attorneys and provides an attorney resource list to physicians seeking the services of a private attorney. The OGC is often the first point of contact for physicians and clinic staff in search of legal information and relevant legal resources.
Private Attorney List
The Wisconsin Medical Society compiled this list of private attorneys to assist Society members in their search for an attorney to handle various issues that arise in medical practice. The list of attorneys is not intended to be exhaustive. Consequently, the absence of an attorney’s name from the list is not a reflection of the attorney’s qualifications.
There are many ways to find competent attorneys, including word of mouth, advertisements and through the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Lawyer Referral Service. The Society provides this list as a courtesy and does not warrant that any particular attorney will be able to handle every issue that a physician might encounter.
The Society does not receive any fee or other consideration for including an attorney’s name on the list. The list is arranged in alphabetical order. The listed attorneys have provided the information about areas of specialty. A few additional resources appear at the end of the list.
